Round brilliant
No shape is more popular than the round brilliant, and its 57 or 58 facets explain why: they are cut specifically to bounce back more light than any other outline. Want the most sparkle possible? Oval
Take a round brilliant and stretch it into an ellipse and you have the oval. Almost all of the round's fire survives the stretch, but the stone now looks bigger than its carat weight suggests and draws the eye down the finger, lengthening it. Little wonder it has become one of the most asked-for shapes of the past few years. The one thing to watch is the bow-tie, a faint shadow that falls across the middle of a badly proportioned oval; cut it well and it all but disappears, which is precisely why we hand-pick each stone.

Emerald
If the round is the extrovert, the emerald cut is the sophisticate. It swaps brilliant faceting for long, straight step-cuts, so instead of fizzing sparkle you get broad, calm flashes of light, the effect jewellers call the hall-of-mirrors. It is understated, elegant, and it wears like a dream. What it will not do is forgive: those wide-open facets hide nothing, so an emerald cut needs genuinely high clarity and colour to look its best. Pear
Picture a round brilliant and a marquise fused together, rounded at one end and drawn to a point at the other, and you have the pear, or teardrop. It manages to be distinctive without shouting, and turned with its point towards the fingernail it slims and lengthens the hand beautifully. Its stretched outline covers more finger than almost any other shape of the same weight, and it makes the hand look long and slender in the process. It is a bold choice, and it is enjoying a real revival. The two points want protecting, and symmetry counts for more here than in any other shape, because the slightest lopsidedness shows at a glance. Radiant

It borrows the same elegant rectangular outline and trimmed corners, but fills the inside with brilliant faceting, so it sparkles nearly as hard as a round.
